History :
The Winter Festival is a result of the joint initiative taken by the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation and the Municipal Board of Tamil Nadu to lure tourists as well as to give the citizens a break from the monotony of everyday existence.

On the occasion of the Winter Festival, eclectic and riveting performances are put up by the talented artistes of Rajasthan. Classical as well as folk singers mesmerize listeners with their songs. The Gair, Ghooomar and Daph folk dances put up by the dancers also do not fail to enthrall anyone.
Other than these cultural programmes, water sports also form part of the festivities. Rowing competitions are held on the lake. Cricket matches are organized.

A large number of diyas or lamps are floated on the Nakki Lake. This ceremony is known by the name of Deepdaan, the sight of so many lighted lamps floating on the river is indeed a visual delight.
At this time many colorful processions are also organized by the local authorities. In fact it is one of these processions that mark the inauguration of the Winter Festival. Starting from Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation's Hotel Shikhar, it proceeds towards Nakki Lake Chowk. The locals enthusiastically participate in it. It is nice to see so many people advancing forward in brightly clad clothes. After finally gathering, performances are put up not only by the folk artistes of Rajasthan but also by those of Gujarat, Punjab and Haryana. The spectators are sure to have a very enjoyable time watching them.
On all three days of the Winter Festival, fire works are lit and this dazzling display is thoroughly enjoyed by the onlookers.
